A New Site for my Photography Wisdom (etc…)

As you may or may not know, I was the founder and creator of an online magazine called Shutter Photo.  As of this writing, the website is still available and there are a lot of great resources there.  I personally wrote thousands of articles and had a host of many writers.  And I intend to keep that all online as long as feasible.  As you may also know, the magazine went dark in 2014 and the site has not been updated since.  After a two-year hiatus, I am back and have interest in writing about photography some more.  So here’s my plans…

I have little interest in getting back to the same level as Shutter Photo.  The magazine was great while it lasted.  It opened up a lot of doors for me, I met a lot of great people and I got to play with a lot of great equipment.  But it was also a bit too formal with a rigorous schedule and I put too much pressure on myself to maintain the site.  I got burned out and I found it difficult to maintain the level of quality in my writing that I had done for eight years.  So I stopped, shut down operations and took a break.

I am always learning and expanding my wisdom and I still have much to share.  I plan to continue writing on a more limited basis.  I don’t promise that 4 North will have a dedicated publication schedule; I certainly won’t even try to meet 3 articles a week like I did with Shutter Photo.  Maybe it’s a couple of solid articles a month, maybe some months there won’t be at all.  But I promise one thing:  If it isn’t worth writing about; if it isn’t worth sharing; you won’t find it here.  I won’t do filler anymore.  I won’t maintain a staff.  It will all be much simpler and much more relaxed.

Over the next several months, I intend to update some of my old educational articles and republish them here.  As the original author, I have the rights to do so.  I will not be able to republish any of the works of my former staff due to the way Shutter Photo was structured (writers maintained ownership of their articles and licensed to the magazine, not to me personally).  I hope to have a nicely distilled collection of photography learning right here at 4 North.  I will also add new content, but not just about photography education.  This site will be more personal, and so I will be sharing new photos from my ongoing No Words project as well as some of my finer work.  I will talk about other things that interest me like music or movies or current events.  In the end, I hope you’ll find something here worth coming back to read.

For all of you who have been with me over the years, thank you for your continued support.  I hope I don’t disappoint you here.
